Mary Webb. “A Hawthorn Berry.” Manuscript poem, one leaf, 8″ x 6⅞″, pale violet laid paper, thirteen lines in black ink with corrections. Signed at the bottom: “Mary Webb. / (Mrs. H. B. L. Webb.)” All things in nature were at once a symbol and an embodiment of a living, creative truth to Webb. In the contemplation of a small, round berry, Mary engages our senses and weaves her personal philosophy into her poem. “How sweet a thought, / How strange a deed, / To house such glory in a seed ”
