Mary Webb. “The Wood.” Manuscript poem, one leaf, 12″ x 7⅞″, on off-white laid paper, black ink, forty lines. Corners wrinkled. Mary drew inspiration from Spring Coppice on Lyth Hill close by her home at Spring Cottage. Mary was able to absorb then poetically express a “spirit of place,” as she does in these rhymed couplets describing the sights and sounds of her “little wood” throughout the seasons.
