Mary Webb. “The Door.” Typescript poem, one leaf, 5½″ x 5¾″, white wove paper. Twelve lines, four ink corrections. Cut from a larger sheet, and with a few minor creases. Penciled number “35” (?) in upper-right corner. Devastated by her father’s death at age 67, twenty-eight year old Mary grieved so acutely that she suffered a relapsed of the Grave’s disease she had contracted at age 20. Gradually, Mary worked through her grief by composing prose and poetry dedicated to her much-loved father’s memory as in this lament for humanity.
