Mary Webb. “How Short a While—.” Typescript poem, one leaf, 3¼″ x 5¾″, white wove watermarked paper. Fourteen lines in two stanzas, two ink corrections. Cut from a larger sheet, and with a few minor creases. The title is written in black ink and may have been added to the sheet at a later date. Young Mary Meredith, finding companionship and understanding with Henry Webb that she had only known with her late father, remembers the bleak unhappiness of her life after her father’s death and contrasts it to her current contentment.
