Mary Webb. Autograph letter signed, May 24 [1923], to Morton Luce, four pages on two leaves. In this letter, Webb regrets having missed an opportunity to speak with Luce in person, and clearly conveys the strained relationship that had developed between her and her mother-in-law: “. . . I was looking for a room on Saturday, as I did not stay at Mrs. Webbs [sic]. I am never invited there, and she even resented my presence in Weston at all! Though I did not have even one meal at her house, and left Bertie [her husband, Henry] free to her without troubling them at all.” Webb concludes: “Bertie says he also called. I didn’t know he had, as I saw very little of him & his in Weston.”
