Mary Webb. “Green Rain.” Typescript poem, one leaf, 10¼″ x 8″, white wove watermarked paper. “Green Rain” was inspired by the dense woods near Webb’s Spring Cottage, on the southern end of Lyth Hill. “The wooded isolation of Lyth Hill never ceased to beckon Mary and to inspire her poems. She responded keenly to its atmosphere: here the peculiarly compelling spell of Shropshire is intensified” (Coles, The Flower of Light, 1978, p. 70). Webb found commercial success with this poem, which was accepted for publication (in mid-1923) by both the Spectator and the Living Age. Walter de la Mare selected the poem for inclusion in his anthology of poetry, Come Hither (1923).
