Mary Webb. Untitled (the first line reads: “O bee!”). Typescript poem, one leaf, 7″ x 6½″, white wove watermarked paper. Sixteen lines in four stanzas, one ink correction. Wrinkled, smudged, and with a faint mark from a paper clip. Carelessly cut from a larger sheet. The trimming of the bottom margin has removed most of an ink notation, which may have been a signature. Published in Poems and The Spring of Joy (London: Jonathan Cape, 1928, p. 24) as “Mischief: To a Bee” this poem is an impish, celebration of bees visiting the different flowers as they collect nectar for honey.
