Mary Webb. The Chinese Lion. “Mrs. Webb / 5 Grove Cottages / The Grove / Hampstead / London N.W.3.” written (and crossed out) in the upper-right corner of the first leaf. In the upper-left corner of the first leaf is written (and crossed out) “About 3000” [indicating the word count of the story]. Prose manuscript, fourteen leaves: the first ten, 10″ x 8″, thin off-white ruled wove paper, brown ink; the last four, 10½″ x 8″, heavier white ruled laid paper, black ink. With a few corrections in the text. Signed at the bottom of the last leaf: “Mary Webb.” This urban story is about two lovers who are separated and then reunited. Published in 1937 by the London bookseller Bertram Rota. Provenance: Betty M. Horton, Kerry Payne.
