Mary Webb. Armour Wherein He Trusted. London: Jonathan Cape, 1929. First edition, with an introduction by Martin Armstrong. The last half of this volume contains ten short stories by Webb. Original gold-stamped green cloth and dust jacket. With a rare green printed slip surrounding the dust jacket, commenting on the content and literary interest of the volume. Bookplate of Paul Jordan Smith (1895–1971), an American journalist, editor, and bibliophile who lived in Los Angeles, California. In For the Love of Books (1961), Smith devotes five pages to his appreciation of Mary Webb’s novels and says: “I congratulate myself that I began collecting Mary Webb before Mr. Stanley Baldwin’s testimony sent her first editions skyward!”
