Henry B. L. Webb. Autograph postcard signed, October 17, 1928, to “Messrs. J. B. Pinker & Sons / Talbot House / Arundel St. / Strand W. C. 2.” Webb says that he has sent copies of Mary Webb’s five novels to the addressees’ representative in Hollywood. The literary agent James Brand Pinker (1863–1922) represented many well-known British and American writers, including: H. G. Wells, Jack London, James Joyce, Stephen Crane, Arnold Bennett, Henry James, and Joseph Conrad. After Pinker’s death in 1922, his firm continued under the direction of his two sons, Eric and James Ralph, with whom Henry dealt in 1928. Jonathan Cape’s seven-volume Collected Works (1928–29) was reprinted six times from 1928 to 1929; each volume became a best seller in its own right. In managing Mary’s literary estate, Henry rapidly became quite wealthy.
